Frequently Asked Questions

Updated Monday June 17, 2019 by RNJ.

Do we have to be residents of a particular town to be a part of the team?

No, we have members from over 15 towns, all are welcome!

I have never rowed before.  How will I know I like it?

Row New Jersey  offers a Learn To Row Program during the summer.  In the winter months, new rowers have the opportunity to visit West Point to practice at the West Point in-door facility.  If you would like to learn more about joining our team, contact Crew Director, Coach Rob Welsh at

How do I register?
All new athletes must create a new SI Play account.  Registration is by season. RNJ  accepts PayPal and credit cards.  Fees may be divided into two equal payments.  A tax free donation is included in the fee ($300 in the fall/$500 in the spring).  If you have any questions, please contact

All athletes must complete the RNJ Health Update Form and the NJ Athletic Physical Form to participate in our programs. Athletes that have not turned in the forms or athletes with expired medical forms will not be allowed to participate in our programs.

What days and times are the practices?
Practice for male and female athletes is Monday - Saturday.
Male athletes practice 3:30-5:30pm Monday - Friday; 8:00-10:30am Saturday
Female athletes practice 5:00-7:00pm Monday - Friday; 10:30am-1:00pm Saturday

Where is practice held?
Fall and Spring Season: Lee's Marina, Lake Hopatcong, 443 Howard Blvd, Mt Arlington, NJ 07856
Winter Training: TBD

What do I need for practice?

  • Please dress in layers of tight-fitting clothes. Bulky coats don't provide the necessary range of motion.  Scarves flap in the wind.
  • Spandex shorts in the warm weather and long spandex pants in the cold weather are ideal. Loose fitting shorts or pants will become caught in the sliding seat.
  • Hats in the winter and sun visors or baseball caps in the warmer weather.
  • Bring a good pair of sneakers.  Running will play a significant part of land conditioning. Athletes without proper footwear may be sent home.
  • Socks are also essential.  We don't want anyone putting bare feet into boat shoes.
  • Many participants choose to wear sandals that are easy to slip on and off at the dock.
  • Water bottle
  • No gloves and rings.  They will interfere with gripping the oar and cause blisters.

‚ÄčThere is a place to change at Lake Hopatcong.

Will I get wet?
Yes, rowing is a water sport.  There is often a little splash or spray while rowing.

What if I have to miss practice?
It is important to come to all practices.  Rowing requires teamwork.  By missing a practice you are not only missing valuable information and training, but you may be preventing the team from filling a boat. Please contact one of the coaches if you have to miss practice.

What if I am late for practice?
It is important to be on time for all practices.  Ideally, all athletes should arrive 15 minutes before practice begins so that they are dressed and ready for training.  Also, if you are late, your boat may row out to the lake without you and you will not have a way to reach your team.

How do I take care of blisters?
Blisters are an inevitable consequence of rowing.  It is important to keep blisters clean. Neosporin and rubbing alcohol are good over the counter products to clean the blistered area and help to relieve the pain. Band-aids and tape will help protect the blisters from getting infected.

Does practice get canceled due to inclement weather?
The decision to cancel practice is at the discretion of Coach Welsh.  He will notify the team via email if practice is canceled.  Rain does not prevent the team from practicing. The team can do land conditioning if they are not able to go out on the water.  The team will not go out on the water if there is thunder, lightning or high winds.

What do I wear to regattas?
RNJ  uniforms are available through our team uniform vendor.  Shortly after the season begins, an online store will become available for you to purchase  RNJ uniforms.   Team members will be notified via email when uniforms are to be ordered.  Required uniforms include: RNJ unisuits ("unis'). Other Row New Jersey apparel will be available for purchase at our store each season.  Only club designated apparel is allowed to be worn while racing.

Can athletes participate in just the Fall or Spring?
Yes, athletes can participate in just the fall season or just the spring season.

Are there try-outs?
No, all athletes are welcome to participate in our program.

Who races?
All athletes that regularly attend practice are eligible for all regattas except for invitationals.  Novice athletes race against other novice teams during their first year. Crews and line-ups are selected by the coaches based on strength, endurance, technique, motivation and compatibility.  Line-ups are announced less than one week prior to the regatta.

What time do I have to arrive at a regatta?
Athletes are expected to be at the race site 2 or more hours prior to their race time.

Can I leave after my race?
No athlete may leave the regatta until dismissed by Coach Welsh.

Does Row New Jersey  provide transportation to Lake Hopatcong?
RNJ  does not provide transportation to Lake Hopatcong or to regattas.
